Traditional Style Homes
Preservation planning, restoration, sensitive additions and remodeling,
as well as, new homes of antique styles
Leigh Douglas Johnson is an experienced restoration and preservation professional. He worked mainly in New England from 1975 to 1997, and often in subsequent years. He has done this work also in New Mexico, California, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Minnesota. Our projects have included antique Dutch Colonial homes in the Hudson River Valley. He has also custom designed a number of 'reproduction' type homes, in which the historic house types and styles have been faithfully reproduced. As well, he's been the designer with unique original design solutions for houses with more up-to-date interior concepts when the antique style has been used as context. He was a partner in 18th Century Woodworking & Design for many years, and in following the tradition of old world craftsmanship, has continued the work as the owner of Fine Home Design. His restoration projects have involved all aspects of historic construction from timber frame reconstruction to hand molded and carved interior detailing. The architectural work included restoration and reproduction designs of houses of all major periods, from a humble log cabin house and an Adirondack style Lodge to a the Southern Georgian mansion. He continues a strong interest in all manner of projects involving early American architecture from First Period to Early 20th Century styles.

Colonial Architecture
Cape Cod Style Home in Woodstock, Vermont
This Vermont 'Cape Cod Style' Farmhouse was designed along strict historic lines and built from mostly antique materials including two antique houses and an antique barn frame, lighting and hardware, doors, flooring, and wall paneling. Combined in a seamless manner with up to date technologies where they don't show. A home for the purist -- this 1988 home could fool a historian.
At left is an accurate reproduction of a late 17th Century stairway, exhibiting that hand crafted excellence. This fine work was part of the restoration of an early coastal Massachusetts home.

Center Chimney Colonial Home in Boxford, MA

This accurate reproduction, New England center chimney type colonial home of the Georgian Period was built in the historic district of Boxford, a very early town near the coast of Massachusetts . It is of timber frame in the traditional manner and includes a large, well lit and open family room and kitchen space.
Excellent, traditional timber framing for accurate antique style homes or for open plan designs. The picture at left shows a detail of traditional timber joinery employed to construct a large English style barn in North Hampton, New Hampshire.

A Very Early Vermont Home in East Rupert, Vermont
This very early Vermont home was constructed with hewn square logs, producing 8" thick hardwood walls with dovetailed corner joints. The house had previously been reconstructed in Rupert, Vt. in 1935. In 1997 we raised it up, built a new DRY basement under it, restored the rotted floor structure, and added the 19th Century style addition you see here. The addition doubles the living area and quadruples the livability. A photo of the very large up to date yet 19th Century styled kitchen is shown. Behind the hearth like cooking center shown here, is a walk through Pantry housing the refrigerator and microwave oven. The Kitchen functions as a Family Room too, complete with sofa and chairs.

Victorian Home Designs
We have enabled the restoration, renewal, and updating of Victorian Classics in New England, The Midwest, and the gold rush towns of California. The Gothic Victorian at left below was enlarged and restored after removal of a most unfortunate 60's addition. A detail photo of the new front porch is shown. At right below is a photo of a new home designed to fit perfectly on a quiet street of original Victorian homes in Ludlow, Vt.
