The New California Heritage Style
|
|
This home design presents an original new style created by Leigh Douglas Johnson especially for home sites in the lower foothills of California. The style draws directly upon historical Japanese and Chinese architecture ( especially that of the higher classes) and also on the historical Spanish Colonial style found in this country's South West and California during that colonial era, and revived in the early 20th century in California. The Spanish and the Chinese had a huge impact in early California, and this new style seeks to pay homage to this heritage. The barrel tile roofing is found in both the Spanish and the Oriental sources as is the stucco wall finish. The windows shown here are a modified Craftsman style readily available from many window manufacturers. The special treatments where the roof edges and the exterior walls flare outward is taken from the Oriental sources. This is only one particular design employing this new style and it may readily be used for our future client's custom home designs. The style is adaptable to homes of virtually any size. The wide eave projections are suited for warmer climates, to help to shade the windows from direct sunlight. The interiors are open and spacious, with larger windows to keep the interiors full of indirect natural light. The particular design shown here includes a master suite, guest suite, large entertaining great room, dining room, butler's pantry with wine cellar, large kitchen/family room, laundry, theater, library, a loggia, semi detached garage complex, 3 other bedrooms, and 6 bathrooms. In all it contains 7,600 sq' of interior living space.
