I researched and created this fine stairway for a dear friend, early on in my career as a restoration architect. Her home was built in 1690 and retained most of its original woodwork. Strangly, the main front stair had been replaced with a most unfortunate one of a common 20th Century carpenter style. So, that had to go ! This new antique stair was built and finished in perfect period detail and structure. The space below this stair was now not adequate for the 20th Century cellar stair. Thus there was a gap in the original wall paneling of one of the Parlors. This carved shell cupboard I created to fill the need, the shell filling the top of the gap with part of the new stair behind.
